Christmas for Seniors

In 2023, the Lindsay Garden Club (Lindsay & District Horticultural Society) “Flower Power” team, took on a special project to recognize and celebrate seniors living in long-term care in Lindsay.

Volunteers delivered flowering plants to over 600 residents, along with handmade

cards from local school children. Immediately following deliveries, messages from

staff were received. “You can’t imagine the ripple effect this has had through our

home already.”

Flower Power & The Lindsay Garden Club would like to make this an annual

event, extending to our retirement homes as well. We are seeking the generous

support of area businesses to help up raise sufficient funds to cover the cost of the

Christmas Flowers & other expenses.

To commit to this project, we must place our order with the flower supplier by August 1st.

Please, join us in making this special

project a reality for 2024.

In 2023 our total costs were $4100 for this project.

-Much of the cost went to the flowers & foil wrap on the pots.

Other expenses included: gift bags, tissue paper, ribbon, Christmas cards, all purchased

from local businesses or Canadian suppliers, plus facility rental for storing & packing the

plants. -Our plants were ordered from the supplier in early August. Kawartha Classic Flowers was integral in selecting flowers and getting the best possible

price from suppliers and has also begun the search for our best cost this year! We will be

ordering the same plants as last year, as they have an incredibly long bloom time, with

minimal care.

-We delivered to all the residents of Victoria Manor, Extendicare, Caressant Care Mary

Street & McLaughlin Road, Victoria Manor and Frost Manor and included the retirement

residents at Caressant Care & Extendicare, totally 606!

-This year we want to include 140 Wiliam Street & Country Estates, which will encompass

all long-term care & retirement residences in Lindsay, bringing our total to 732 residents!

Our project all came together on December 13th & 14th.

-We had 23 volunteers from the Lindsay Garden Club, who did everything from meeting

the delivery truck on the 13th and offloading at The Lindsay Lounge, where we had

assembly lines packaging our plants and organizing for each home.

-The following day, another 14 volunteers delivered plants to each long-term care home

and presented the gifts personally to residents. Due to medical concerns at the time,

staff assisted in delivering to most of the residents within each home.

We are very proud to say, that it came together smoothly, without a hitch! We are very excited for this year.

Our expected dates are December 4th & 5th this year!

With rising costs, and the inclusion of retirement residents as well, we are expecting our

total cost this year to be $5000. Please consider being a part of this community project

which honours our local seniors.
